Construction of the first homes at Quebec Park is now underway and the first show home will be open later this year. Stakeholders, residents and local dignitaries attended a formal ‘start on site’ tour and presentation at Quebec Park this week (4th February 2016) as construction of the first phase of the development got underway following demolition completion. Hosted by developer Radian, one of the south’s leading housing, support and care providers, today’s event show cased the detailed development at Quebec Park.

Radian also announced that it has appointed award-winning local construction firm, Drew Smith to deliver the 100 zero carbon new homes at Quebec Park as part of the wider Whitehill & Bordon redevelopment which will see a total of 3,350 new homes built as well as 5,500 new jobs and a new town centre. The homes will be constructed to the highest sustainable standards, making them easier and cheaper to run.

Open market properties will consist of 65 two, three and four bedroom houses and some apartments. The remaining 35 homes will provide affordable housing, including 10 for shared ownership. The initial show home should be ready by the end of the year with the homes constructed in phases over the next two years. First residents are likely to move in early in 2017 and the development is scheduled to be completed in 2018.

As part of the development there will be a number of employment opportunities created across the site: this includes the Community Enterprise Hub which will be built in the existing Chieftain and Centurion Barracks.

Approximately 50 jobs will be created within these buildings and a further 50 jobs including ancillary services for home workers, secretarial services and meeting rooms and a community café. A selection of construction apprenticeships will also be generated.

Commenting on the appointment Andrea Smith, Director of Development and New Business at Radian said:

“Start on site is a great milestone for Quebec Park. As the first development to get underway in the redevelopment of the town, all eyes will be on the new homes as they begin to take shape. With the demolition complete, we are looking forward to starting the first phase construction.”

Drew Smith Director Adrian Cator, said:

“We are delighted to have been appointed on such an exciting development for the local area. Having worked on a number of other projects with Radian, we are looking forward to seeing Quebec Park take shape.”

Drew Smith and Radian have a history of working successfully together after completing award winning projects such as Stoneham Green in Southampton. The firm boasts an excellent knowledge of the local area, a strong record for delivering on time and to budget and recently won the Richard Fielding Award at 2015 Housing Design Awards.

Cllr Ferris Cowper, Leader of East Hampshire District Council, said:

“Today’s event is a major milestone in the town’s transformation as it marks the start of homes being built and jobs being created in one of the country’s most significant regeneration projects.

“Whitehill & Bordon’s transformation is now well and truly underway and I am really looking forward to seeing the results on the ground. This is an extremely exciting time for the town and its residents – and I can’t wait to step foot in the first show home later this year.

“And of course Quebec Park isn’t just about providing much-needed homes it’s about creating 100 new jobs on the site alongside a new café and new construction apprenticeships. It is all these important elements combined that make this such a fantastic development which I hope residents will be really proud of.”

As the Government’s national land agency, the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) acquired the former barracks in order to prepare the land for housing development. Alongside neighbouring Louisburg, the two HCA-owned sites will provide 600 homes for the local community. Radian was selected by the HCA as the development partner for Quebec Barracks in 2013.

Kevin Bourner, Head of Area at the HCA commented:

“The Quebec Barracks site provides a good opportunity to build much needed, quality homes for the local area.

“We are confident that Radian and Drew Smith will deliver high quality, sustainable housing, which will support the overall vision for Whitehill & Bordon.”
