The Green Loop and wayfinding in Whitehill & Bordon has been shortlisted for a prestigious Planning Award in the best use of arts, culture or sport in placemaking category.

The loop connects residents to their environment and encourages active travel between employment, leisure and residential spaces. It is a partnership effort between East Hampshire District Council (EHDC), Hampshire County Council, Whitehill & Bordon Regeneration Company, Urban Place Lab and Whitehill Town Council.

The waymarking of the route uses visual motifs and materials that are a reminder of the area’s history as an Army garrison town.

The winning entry will be announced on 9 June.

Councillor Phillip Davies, EHDC assistant portfolio holder for Whitehill & Bordon, said:

“The Green Loop is a tremendous asset to Whitehill & Bordon and I often see residents using it for recreation and to get from A to B within the town.

“It is an honour to be shortlisted for this award and to receive recognition for the positive impact that the Green Loop has on the health of local people and the climate.”

Hampshire County Council’s Executive Member for Highways Operations, Councillor Russell Oppenheimer, commented:

“This is very good news and is another example of what can be achieved through successful partnership working.

“I am delighted that we have been able to play an integral role in the Green Loop initiative through investment and construction of a network of walking and cycling routes to provide the infrastructure for people to travel locally in a healthy and sustainable way.”
